Purim

What it remembers

Purim remembers the deliverance of the Jewish people from Haman’s plan to destroy them, as recorded in Esther. Esther and Mordecai helped bring the danger before the king, and the intended destruction was overturned. The name Purim comes from Pur, meaning the lot, which Haman had cast in making his plan.

Study the meaning

Esther 9 describes an annual remembrance of sorrow turned into joy and mourning into celebration. It includes feasting, gladness, sharing portions with one another, and gifts to the poor. Study the whole book of Esther for the background, then read the instructions that preserve this remembrance across generations.
